The University of St. Thomas has several locations. The 50 acre campus was established in 1885. In 1987 a south campus was added with 28 acres, 1992 160 acres in Owatonna, and in 1982 the Bernardi Campus in Rome, Italy was added along the Tiber River totaling 20,000 square feet.
St. Thomas is in the third of four tiers in the national university-doctoral category. Prior to 2001, St. Thomas was rnaked as a regional university and consistently placed in the top 10 of 124 Midwest universities. St. Thomas has been coeducational since 1977.
