Dartmouth is the nation’s ninth oldest college and a member of the Ivy League. Dartmouth holds schools of business, engineering and medicine as well as 18 graduate programs in the arts and sciences. Its 200-acre main campus features state-of-the-art academic facilities.
Founded in 1769 by the Rev. Eleazar Wheelock for the education of “youth of the Indian Tribes…English Youth and others.” Dartmouth became coeducational in 1972. The scale of the College ensures the intimacy of a liberal arts college, while providing research opportunities typically found at much larger institutions. Dartmouth Medical School is the nation’s fourth-oldest medical school founded in 1797.
The Dartmouth calendar consists of a year-round schedule of four 10-week terms which allows flexibility in scheduling. Undergraduates must be on campus freshman year, summer before junior year, and senior year. Dartmouth’s computing environment includes a wireless network that covers the entire campus. Beginning in the fall of 2003, local and long-distance telephone calling was enabled over the campus network using “software phones” and VolP software. Ownership of a computer has been required of undergraduates since 1991.
Dartmouth holds an endowment of $2.714 billion. .
