ACT Scores Needed for Success

High ACT scores are no guarantee of success, but which scores “usually” predict success? The ACT corporation has figured this out.
- An English score of 18 gives the student a 50% chance for a “B” in English Composition in college. That same student has a 75% chance of earning a “C”.
- An ACT score of 22 in Math, gives the student a reasonable expectation of earning a “B” or “C” in college algebra.
- With an ACT score of 21 in Reading, a student can reasonably expect to earn a “B” or a “C” in the social sciences in college.
- And, an ACT score of 24 is a good indicator of earning a “B” or “C” in college biology.
Of course, there are many variables to consider. Students may be in a college with expectations beyond their capabilities which could set them up to fail. Match your academic abilities with a college at the same level. Some professors are more difficult to understand than others. Tutoring may not be available. And, if social life is your major the first year, the ACT scores don’t really matter.
